Nemonte Nenquimo is a remarkable Indigenous leader of the Waorani people in Ecuador, celebrated for her courageous work in protecting the Amazon rainforest from oil exploitation. Her dedication to environmental conservation and Indigenous rights has earned her global recognition, including the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in 2020. Nemonte’s activism serves as a powerful reminder of the essential connection between people and nature.

 

In this artwork, Nemonte’s face merges with that of a jaguar—a symbol of power, protection, and the Amazon itself. The jaguar embodies the spirit of the rainforest and reflects Nemonte’s fierce commitment to defending it. Surrounding her are orchids, representing beauty, strength, and the delicate balance of the ecosystem she strives to preserve.
